This article makes the reader aware of why it is important that we recognize the job that science teachers do. first reason science teaching is hard is that the teachers need to have a very good understanding of topics and subjects that are always changing and are very difficult. science teachers must be able to relay this complicated information to the students in a way that gets the point across. The article also explains that, "it is not what you know, but also how you make the knowledge accessible to young people." It is important to create inquiry based lessons with strong laboratory elements. The article wants the reader to also realize the creativity that goes into making students interested in the complex concepts of science. The need of the next generation of teachers is also swinging to technology and it recognizes how difficult it can be to keep up on all of the new technology. Next this article addresses the need for science teachers to be able to repair lab equipment, order necessary supplies and make sure they are delivered on time for labs etc. there is also the element of safety that come with a science classroom. In most of the other subjects teachers need to worry mostly about classroom management and lesson plans. In science there is the added pressure of dangerous chemicals, tools, and other objects that can cause harm. Steve Metz says, "the science teacher is called upon to be scientist, educator, equipment manager, safety inspector, lecturer, childcare provider, coach writing editor, mathematician, historian, counselor, and stand up comedian."
This was a very informative article dealing with what being a science teacher entails and the misconceptions we will all face over the years as teachers. This is a good article for people interested in being science teachers because it makes you realize what you have in store for your career and can also give you some pride in what you will be doing for many years to come. there are always going to be people that look down on what teachers do and think that anyone can do it. this article shows some of what people may not think abvout when it comes to our science teachers. After reading the article it caused me to think about how prepared you really need to be because of how many different elements there are when you are a teacher. I will Keep some of the points he made in mind while writing my unit plan.
